Nurture Group

At our school, the main purpose of Nurture Group provision is to create a warm, structured, and inclusive small-group environment that supports the social, emotional, and mental wellbeing of all pupils. Children may attend our Nurture Group at times when they find it difficult to manage or engage fully in the mainstream classroom. This may be due to a range of life experiences. These life experiences might include bereavement, relocation, family separation, or a diagnosis that affects their emotional, social, or behavioural development. However, this list is not exhaustive.

During these sessions, staff interact with children through the medium of activities such as art and craft tasks, story telling, cooking, sharing of snacks, informal talk and discussion, meditation, board games, free play activities, music and song singing and various other relaxing tasks.

We are always guided by the Six Principles of Nurture (Nurture UK). Children’s learning is understood developmentally – each child progresses at their own pace. The Nurture Room provides a safe and secure base. Nurture is crucial for the development of a child’s wellbeing. Language is an essential means of communication. All behaviour is a form of communication and will be acknowledged and supported accordingly. Transitions are important in every child’s life and can cause considerable distress on occasion.

Through these principles, we aim to help every child develop the confidence, resilience, and emotional skills needed to thrive both in school and beyond.
