Our class has thoroughly enjoyed our gardening project this year, following the journey of our vegetables from tiny seeds to a delicious homemade soup. π₯π₯π±
Earlier in the year, we planted carrot, turnip, onion and celery seeds, along with seed potatoes, and watched with excitement as the first green shoots appeared. When the seedlings were strong enough, we carefully planted them out into our raised beds. This gave us a wonderful opportunity to learn about how food grows and what plants need to thrive.
In September, it was finally time to harvest our vegetables. The girls were thrilled to dig up potatoes, pull carrots from the soil and see the results of all their hard work. There was great excitement as we compared the different shapes and sizes of our vegetables and talked about how they would be used.
To celebrate our harvest, we brought our vegetables into the classroom and made a tasty vegetable soup. Everyone had a job to do, from washing and preparing the vegetables to helping with the recipe. The classroom was filled with the wonderful smell of homemade soup as it simmered on the hob.
The best part of all was sitting together and enjoying a warm bowl of soup made from vegetables we had grown ourselves. The project helped us learn about gardening, healthy eating and where our food comes from, while also giving us lots of opportunities to work together and have fun.
We are very proud of our garden-to-table achievement here in the Senior Autism Class and are already looking forward to growing more vegetables this year! π±π²π»
